The Federal Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement is holding an inquiry into methamphetamine. Submissions close June 10.
Penington Institute’s submission (hyperlink to submission) calls for greater Federal level support for local law enforcement that encourage diversion of offenders into treatment and harm reduction programs.
Among the 16 recommendations in our submission is the practical suggestion that there be a national program to upskill all necessary workforces and agencies to better understand ice. In addition, there should be a systematic program established to engender local level responses building capacity rather than fear.
A Northern Territory Legislative Assembly Select Committee is also looking at “ice”. Sadly, experience from Victoria reveals that in many ways, and due to cultural factors and kinship networks, there are additional impacts of crystal methamphetamine felt amongst Aboriginal communities. The Penington Institute submission (hyperlink to submission) to the Inquiry stressed this.
