Professionals, families, and community members can help reduce the stigma faced by people who use alcohol and other drugs by using inclusive, person‑first language.
Stigma is a real and harmful barrier. It can make people feel unwelcome and unsafe, stopping them from seeking the support and services they need, and negatively affecting health, wellbeing, employment, and social outcomes. The words we choose have the power to either reinforce stigma or foster connection and safety.
The Power of Words Application Guide is a practical guide to inclusive language that can be used across health, community services, education, justice, media, marketing, and organisational policies. It provides practical tips to shift everyday and professional communication toward language that is welcoming, respectful, and empowering—improving health outcomes and supporting cultural change.
This collaborative project was developed by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation and the Association of Participating Service Users.
