Stigma towards people who use alcohol and other drugs is a real and harmful problem. It can make people feel unwelcome and unsafe, stopping them from seeking the support they need. This can negatively impact health, wellbeing, employment and social outcomes – and in some cases, lead to preventable deaths.
The Power of Words: Having Alcohol and Other Drug Conversations – Project Summary outlines the research and consultations behind this initiative and highlights how inclusive, person-first language can reduce stigma. It encourages health, community, and justice professionals – and anyone communicating about AOD – to avoid terms with negative connotations and instead use language that is welcoming, empowering, and focused on people.
This collaborative project was delivered by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Association of Participating Service Users, Harm Reduction Victoria and Penington Institute, with funding from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.
