Penington Institute CEO John Ryan speaks to The Briefing podcast about the growing toll of preventable overdose deaths.

New analysis from Penington Institute reveals a confronting reality: drug overdoses now claim twice as many lives as Australia’s road toll, yet despite the scale of this tragedy, CEO John Ryan says the crisis remains hidden and under-addressed.

Speaking to The Briefing, Ryan said:

They are incredibly confronting figures. This recent report shows that the overdose toll is the equivalent to losing a Boeing 737 full of Australians each month. A huge number of Australians are dying and 80% of the overdose toll is accidental.

Unlike high-profile disasters, these deaths happen largely out of sight. John Ryan explained that the invisibility of the crisis plays a major role in the lack of public urgency.

If this were a plane crash, it would capture national attention. But these deaths are happening in the quiet of suburban houses and regional towns. They are happening in private so they don’t confront us the way other tragedies do.

The impact of these deaths is far-reaching. Many who overdose are in their 30s, 40s and 50s, often leaving behind children, partners, colleagues, and friends. Behind every number is a community that carries the grief.

Ryan shared a heartbreaking example from a family he had spoken with, a story that shows how lack of awareness can lead to devastating consequences.

I’ve spoken with devastated parents who thought their child was just sleeping it off, but they were slowly overdosing. We need to improve community understanding around this. We will always have some level of drug harm, but we don’t need it to be this high.

Penington Institute continues to push for a National Overdose Prevention Strategy, broader community education, and better access to life-saving tools like naloxone, drug checking, and supervised consumption services.

Without urgent investment in evidence-based harm reduction strategies, Ryan warns, the death toll will continue – quietly.
