Penington Institute mourns the passing and pays tribute to the life and achievements of Professor The Hon Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO.

Professor Bashir served as a Patron of Penington Institute since the organisation’s establishment in 2014.

With trademark compassion and kindness, she was a passionate supporter of Penington Institute’s vision to minimise drug harms to Australians through the pursuit of evidence-based policy approaches.

She lent her name and reputation to the work of drug reform advocates when many who have held high office choose not to.

Professor Bashir’s involvement with Penington Institute was part of her long commitment to public service, having held several prominent roles in the health and harm reduction space, as well as serving as NSW Governor (2001 – 2014).

We are deeply saddened by her passing and send our condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
